About
Surgery is one option among several. The first job is working out whether you actually need it.
Dr. Nikhil Karwande is an orthopaedic surgeon with over seven years of experience in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal disorders, trauma, sports injuries and joint disease. He practises at Mahaveer Hospital in Cannought Place, CIDCO, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where he runs both OPD and operative work.
He completed his MBBS and MS (Orthopaedics) at Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College & KEM Hospital, Mumbai, and went on to earn the Diplomate of National Board in Orthopaedics. His senior residency at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College & General Hospital covered complex trauma, emergency orthopaedics and reconstructive procedures.
Three fellowships followed — arthroscopy, sports medicine and joint replacement at an ISAKOS-approved centre in Bhopal; shoulder and knee surgery at Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan; and foot and ankle surgery in Mumbai. Together they shape how he works today: minimally invasive where possible, evidence-based throughout, and explained in language you can act on.

Your visit
Knowing what happens next takes some of the worry out of it. Here’s how a typical consultation runs.
You describe the problem in your own words. A physical examination follows, checking movement, strength and stability.
X-rays or an MRI where they're needed — and an explanation of what they show, in plain language.
Non-surgical options are considered first. Surgery is discussed when it's genuinely the right answer, with the reasoning laid out.
A rehabilitation plan you can follow at home, with follow-up visits to track how the joint is responding.
What to bring to your first visit
The hospital
OPD and surgery both take place at Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Multispeciality Hospital — a multispeciality facility with modular operation theatres, in-house imaging and inpatient care.Visit the hospital site →

Recognition
Papers at national conferences, a fellowship faculty that includes internationally known surgeons, and local press coverage — the record outside the OPD.

Common questions
Often not. A large share of knee, shoulder and ankle problems respond to physiotherapy, activity modification, medication or injections. Surgery comes into the conversation when those options aren't appropriate or haven't worked — and when it does, you'll be told why.
Yes. Bring your existing films, reports and any surgical advice you've already received. A second opinion is a normal part of deciding about surgery, not an awkward one.
Previous X-rays or MRI films, earlier prescriptions and reports, a list of medicines you currently take, and your implant card if you've had a previous joint surgery. Insurance details if you plan to use a policy.
WhatsApp is used for appointment timings, directions and admin queries. Diagnosis and treatment advice need an in-person examination — messages can't substitute for that, and answering clinical questions over chat wouldn't be safe or appropriate.
It depends entirely on the joint, the procedure and your own health and activity level. You'll be given a realistic timeline for your specific case at the consultation, along with the rehabilitation plan that goes with it.
Insurance and cashless claims are handled by the hospital's front desk rather than the OPD. Call the hospital ahead of your visit to confirm whether your policy is accepted.
